Specialized Tax Planning and Accounting for Kansas Dentists

Schultz & Associates, CPA helping dentists and Dental CPA Kansas

At Schultz & Associates, we’ve developed the Schultz Dental Advantage™ through years of working with dental practices across the country. It’s built on a repeatable process that helps ensure nothing is overlooked while recognizing that no two dental practices are exactly alike. The process stays the same. The recommendations do not.

We follow the same disciplined approach with every dental client because we’re simply too afraid to miss something. Every practice receives the same careful review, the same questions are asked, and the same planning process is followed. The difference is in the outcome. Every dentist has different goals, different cash flow, different tax considerations, and different plans for the future. Our job is to recommend the strategies that make the most sense for your practice—not the strategies that worked for someone else’s.

Because we work with dental practices every day, we’ve seen which tax strategies consistently work, which ones rarely do, and which ones only make sense in very specific situations. Instead of spending valuable time learning how cash flows through a dental practice, we begin with that understanding. That allows us to focus on what really matters—helping you make better financial decisions while providing specialized advice at fees that remain competitive with many general CPA firms.

While our team is based in Michigan, secure cloud technology allows us to provide Kansas dentists with the same responsive service, proactive planning, and personal attention our clients have trusted for years.

Why Kansas Dentists Choose a Specialized Dental CPA

Dental CPA Kansas

Every dental practice is different, but the financial questions are often the same. Because we already understand how dental practices operate, our meetings focus less on explaining the basics and more on helping clients make informed business decisions.

One of the first things we review with a new dental client is collections and overhead. Those two numbers tell us a great deal about the financial health of a practice. In dentistry, overhead generally represents everything that doesn’t end up in the doctor’s pocket. Understanding where those dollars are going often identifies opportunities to improve profitability long before tax season arrives.

Our conversations often center around questions like:

  • Should I purchase the practice building or continue leasing?
  • Is this the right year to invest in new equipment?
  • Should my spouse own the practice real estate?
  • Does a Cash Balance Plan make sense for my situation?
  • When is the right time to open another location?
  • Which tax strategies actually fit my practice instead of someone else’s?

Those conversations create value long after the tax return has been filed.

Kansas Tax Considerations for Dental Practices

Every state has its own tax rules, and Kansas is no exception. Understanding those rules can help reduce taxes, improve compliance, and avoid costly surprises.

Kansas Income Tax

Most Kansas dental practices operate as S corporations or partnerships, which means practice income flows directly to the owner’s individual tax return. Because of that, tax planning shouldn’t wait until the return is being prepared.

Throughout the year, we help Kansas dentists evaluate owner compensation, retirement contributions, equipment purchases, and other planning opportunities while there is still time to act. A proactive approach almost always creates more opportunities than trying to solve problems after year-end.

Kansas Pass-Through Entity Tax Election

One planning opportunity available to many Kansas dentists is the Kansas Pass-Through Entity Tax (PTET) election.

Kansas allows qualifying S corporations and partnerships to elect to pay state income tax at the entity level. Under the right circumstances, that election may create additional federal tax savings by working around the federal limitation on state and local tax deductions.

However, we’ve learned that not every tax strategy belongs in every practice. Before recommending the election, we review factors such as ownership structure, multistate income, projected taxable income, and the owner’s overall tax situation. Sometimes the election produces meaningful savings. Other times, a different approach makes more sense.

Kansas Sales Tax Rules

Most Kansas dentists don’t have to worry about charging sales tax on the dental services they provide. However, the rules can change when products are sold directly to patients. During our tax planning meetings, we review those sales, along with equipment and supply purchases, to help ensure the practice remains compliant with Kansas sales and use tax requirements while avoiding unnecessary surprises during an audit.

Kansas dentists are generally considered the consumer of the equipment and supplies they purchase for their practice. That means sales or use tax is usually due on items used to operate the practice. If sales tax wasn’t charged by the vendor, the practice may still be responsible for remitting Kansas use tax.

Equipment Planning

Investing in technology is often one of the largest financial decisions a dental practice makes. We frequently help clients evaluate purchases such as:

  • CBCT equipment
  • Digital scanners
  • CAD/CAM systems
  • New operatories

Rather than automatically recommending the largest deduction available, we look at the entire tax picture. Sometimes accelerating depreciation makes sense. Other times, spreading deductions over future years creates the better long-term outcome.

Planning Beyond the Tax Return

Preparing an accurate tax return is only one part of the relationship. Through the Schultz Dental Advantage™, our dental clients typically receive:

  • Three proactive tax planning meetings each year
  • Two KPI reports each year
  • Monthly financial statements prepared promptly after month-end
  • Year-to-date financial comparisons
  • Fixed-fee billing with no surprise reconciliation invoice
  • Responsive answers to questions throughout the year

Just as important, we believe our clients should understand the advice they receive. We don’t overwhelm dentists with complicated tax terminology. Instead, we explain the reasoning behind our recommendations so you can make confident financial decisions for your practice.

Serving Kansas Dentists

Whether your practice is located in Wichita, Overland Park, Topeka, Lawrence, Manhattan, or a smaller Kansas community, secure cloud technology allows us to provide the same level of communication and service we deliver to our Michigan clients. Distance no longer determines the quality of your CPA relationship.
