Specialized Accounting and Tax Planning for Dental Practices in Northwest Ohio
Dental practices operate differently than many other businesses. Production, collections, staffing, overhead, equipment purchases, insurance reimbursements, and long-term tax planning all influence the financial success of a practice. Working with a CPA who understands those relationships allows practice owners to spend less time explaining their practice and more time making informed financial decisions.
Schultz & Associates, CPA, PLC provides specialized accounting, tax planning, bookkeeping, payroll, KPI reporting, and advisory services to dental practices throughout Northwest Ohio. Our team has worked with dental practices for many years and understands both the business of dentistry and the tax rules that affect practice owners. Through the Schultz Dental AdvantAge™, we work with practice owners in Toledo, Perrysburg, Maumee, and Sylvania to provide accurate financial reporting, proactive tax planning, and practical advice tailored to the business of dentistry.
Dental practices evolve over time. The financial decisions involved in purchasing a practice, adding associates, opening another location, or preparing for retirement all require different planning strategies. Our role is to help you make those decisions with confidence while providing accounting, tax planning, and advisory services that support your future plans.
Accounting and Tax Planning for Ohio Dental Practices
Dentists spend years learning their profession. Most don’t expect to become experts in accounting, payroll, tax planning, bookkeeping, financial reporting, or Ohio tax compliance. Those responsibilities come with practice ownership, and each plays an important role in the financial health of a practice.
Schultz & Associates works alongside dental practice owners by providing the financial information and advice they need to make informed business decisions. Our responsibilities include maintaining accurate financial records, preparing meaningful financial statements, developing proactive tax strategies, processing payroll, monitoring key performance indicators, and helping practice owners understand the financial impact of the decisions they make throughout the year.
Through the Schultz Dental AdvantAge™, our team provides a structured approach to accounting and tax planning that grows with your practice. Whether you’re purchasing your first office or managing multiple locations, our advice is based on your goals, your practice, and where you want your practice to go.
Ohio Pass-Through Entity Tax

The Ohio Pass-Through Entity Tax (PTET) election can reduce overall taxes for some dental practice owners, but it is not beneficial in every situation. Whether the election makes sense depends on factors such as your entity structure, taxable income, owner deductions, and your overall federal and Ohio tax picture.
Rather than recommending the election simply because it is available, we evaluate it as one part of your overall tax strategy. Our objective is to determine whether the election provides a meaningful benefit and complements the other planning opportunities available to your practice.
Ohio Municipal Income Taxes
Ohio’s municipal income tax system is one of the most complex in the country. Unlike many states, individual municipalities may impose their own income tax rates, filing requirements, and employer withholding rules.
For dental practices operating from a single office, compliance is often straightforward. As practices grow, however, the rules become more complicated. Opening a second location, operating in multiple municipalities, or employing team members across different cities can create additional filing and payroll responsibilities.
We also help practices determine where employee withholding is required, how municipal taxes apply when employees work in multiple locations, and what additional filings may be necessary as your practice expands.
Our team has worked with complex state and local tax rules for many years. Our job is to take those complexities and explain them in a straightforward way so you understand your options, make informed decisions, and stay focused on running your practice.
The Schultz Dental AdvantAge™
Every dental practice is different. A dentist purchasing a first practice faces different decisions than an owner with multiple locations or someone preparing for retirement. For that reason, we don’t believe every client should receive the same recommendations or the same tax strategies.
The Schultz Dental AdvantAge™ is our structured approach to serving dental practices. It helps us understand your goals, evaluate planning opportunities, and provide advice that aligns with where you want your practice—and your life—to go. Rather than focusing only on tax season, we work with you throughout the year to help ensure your accounting, tax planning, and financial decisions continue to support your future.
Let’s Start with a Conversation

Your first meeting will be a Zoom conversation with Jason Lira, Partner in Charge of the Schultz Dental AdvantAge™. During that meeting, you’ll have the opportunity to discuss your practice, ask questions, and learn more about how we work with dental practice owners throughout Northwest Ohio.
If we believe we’re a good fit for one another, we’ll discuss the next steps. In many cases, that means a second Zoom meeting. For dentists who prefer to meet in person, our Canton, Michigan office is located approximately one hour from Toledo, making in-person meetings a convenient option for dental practices throughout Northwest Ohio.
If you’re looking for a Dental CPA in Ohio, we welcome the opportunity to learn more about your practice.
