Changing your Nonprofit Audit Firm Doesn’t Have to Be Complicated

Changing your nonprofit audit firm doesn’t have to be complicated. We begin with a Zoom meeting to learn about your organization, your reporting requirements, and your upcoming audit. The evaluation process typically requires less than two hours of your time. If we both believe we’re a good fit, we’ll provide a fixed-fee proposal the following business day. There is no obligation to move forward.
Many nonprofit organizations hesitate to change audit firms because they assume the first year will require a significant amount of time and disruption. We understand that concern. Our planning process, secure client portal, and organized approach are designed to make the transition as efficient as possible while allowing your staff to remain focused on running the organization.
Our goal is to make the audit an organized, predictable process instead of a stressful one. Once you engage Schultz & Associates, every nonprofit audit follows a structured process designed to communicate expectations clearly, keep the engagement moving efficiently, and meet agreed-upon reporting deadlines.
Meet Your Nonprofit Audit Firm Team
Schultz & Associates provides nonprofit audit and accounting services to organizations throughout Michigan and across the United States. Approximately 90% of our attest practice involves nonprofit organizations, giving our team extensive experience with nonprofit financial reporting, accounting, and compliance.
Lewis Boucher leads our nonprofit audit practice. Clients appreciate Lew’s calm approach, thoughtful questions, and ability to explain complex accounting and auditing issues in plain English. He stays focused on the matters that affect the engagement while communicating efficiently throughout the audit process. Organizations often tell us that Lew is personable, organized, and easy to work with.
Our objective is not simply to issue an audit report. We want management and board members to understand the process, know what to expect, and feel comfortable asking questions throughout the engagement.

Nonprofit Audit Planning
Every nonprofit audit performed under Generally Accepted Auditing Standards begins with planning. Once the engagement letter has been signed, we schedule a planning meeting to learn what has changed since the prior audit and how those changes affect the current year’s engagement.
We discuss new programs, changes in key personnel, significant transactions, litigation, changes in internal controls, and other matters that affect the audit approach. This allows us to tailor our audit procedures to your organization rather than simply repeating the prior year’s audit program.
Following the planning meeting, we provide a comprehensive information request through our secure client portal. We ask organizations to upload the requested information before fieldwork begins so our team can prepare efficiently and minimize additional requests throughout the engagement.
This organized approach helps everyone. Our team spends more time performing the audit and less time waiting for documentation. Your staff spends less time responding to repeated requests and more time focusing on your organization’s mission.

Internal Controls and Audit Walkthroughs
Walkthroughs are one of the most valuable parts of a nonprofit audit. They allow us to understand how transactions move through your organization while evaluating the effectiveness of internal controls.
When appropriate, we discuss observations during the walkthrough instead of waiting until the engagement has concluded. Those conversations allow management to ask questions, understand our recommendations, and often begin strengthening processes before the audit is complete.
Our role is to perform an independent audit in accordance with professional standards. We also believe that professional communication, mutual respect, and timely discussions create a better audit experience for everyone involved.
Nonprofit Audit and Review Services
Schultz & Associates provides nonprofit financial statement audits and financial statement reviews for charitable organizations, religious organizations, foundations, associations, and other tax-exempt entities.
Many of our nonprofit audit engagements are completed remotely using secure technology. Whether fieldwork is performed remotely or on-site, our commitment remains the same: an organized process, timely communication, and a professional engagement from beginning to end.
